Surviving the snow

First of all, hope everyone had a great snow day!!! I sure did. The highlight of my day however was definitely not my morning run. Lots of fresh snow, ice and potential wipeouts just waiting to happen. And boy did they happen.

When running in these kind of conditions, the only priority is survival. These days are kind of nice in some ways because the runs are very very slow. There is no pace pushing and you are so focused on not falling that the run actually goes by faster. You get frequent breaks because you have to figure out how to make it around a huge snow pile and the much needed stops to laugh at the people wiping out all around you.

But in all seriousness, in these kind of lovely snowy conditions you should always remember that it is a marathon, not a sprint. No matter if its a 3 mile or 12 mile run. Just take your time, get your mileage in and even if you aren't going your usual pace remember that you are getting extra cardio because it is harder on your body to run in tough conditions. Honestly just huge props to anyone who runs in these conditions on a regular basis cause boy it is tough!

  1. I don't think I could ever run in the snow! But I completely understand your point about how the run feels like it goes by faster, as your mind is distracted. I know for me, when doing a workout, fitness classes where I can't see the clock always go by quicker than the times where a clock is glaring me in the face. I'm glad you were able to enjoy the snow (and not fall) on the off day!

  2. Props to you for running in the snow! I'm sure the crisp air was hard on you but I bet you felt so refreshed at the end of it! I don't think I would be able to do it!

  3. I stay indoors in the snow but I like running in freshly ploughed fields. Its a challenge to find footing and not twist an ankle and you kind of have to hop over the rows too which makes it fun.

  4. I'm cold just thinking about this! I slip on ice far too often while just normally walking, so I don't think I'd do a good job of running in it. It's a great mentality you and your teammates have though to make sure you stay as safe as possible!
