Team is Everything

Im just gonna start out by saying, my team is the absolute best. Even tho I have been out most of this season there is not one day that went by that I didn't feel like I was apart of the team. Since I was barely attending any of the team practices it would be pretty easy to feel left out. Instead I received countless texts and phone calls about how I was doing and when I was going to be running again. Now this leads into my favorite thing to do which is brag about my teammates. My teammates worked so so hard this fall. From 5 am workouts to 15 mile long runs every Sunday, they killed every single practice. All that hard work led up to this past Saturday, the MVC cross country championships. Both the boys and girls teams went in ranked numero uno and they definitely competed like they were number 1.  The cool part about our teams this year was that they weren't full of all old people or all young people. There was such a good mix. The girls had some super seniors, some seniors...

Its Not All About Running!!

I know, I know.  Really crazy to even think that there are other things than running that you need to do in order to stay in good shape, physically and emotionally. Here are some things that I think are a important part of running. The first thing I wanna talk about is weight lifting. I know what you're thinking, runners are the most scrawny people in the world and yes that is correct. Lifting is not all about getting huge. We lift twice a week for about an hour and its never a competition to see who can lift the most. It is mostly centered around toning and strengthening certain little muscles in our abs, core, and arms to prevent us from getting injured. You will be able to see that a lot of this blog will be about preventative things that we do just cause it is so dang easy to get injured. The next thing that I'm gonna talk about is core and meditation. At least once a week after practice we have a pretty intense core session. This consists of about 15 min straight up ex...

Tips for Getting Back Into Shape!!

Great News!! I am running again. Finally. Not so great news: I am horribly out of shape. Even though I have been cross training and swimming, nothing gets you in the same shape that running every day does. So in this blog I am going to talk about some easy tips to get back into shape the right way. My first tip, patience is key. If you are a runner like me the solution is not to go run 10 miles on your first day back running. You will be injured the next day, that is a promise. I started back by running for 15 minutes about 4 times and then I slowly started running farther and farther. It is very important to build a solid base. My second tip is recovery, recovery, recovery. It is so so important to take care of yourself before and after runs. I am so bad at this because I only think to do these things once I am already injured (tragic I know). You should always heat or roll out your legs before all of your runs and do some kind of dynamic warm up. After runs you should roll out ag...

Back at it

When I chose to run in college I knew it was going to be full of ups and downs. When you run a lot your body starts to hate you a lot because you are slowly breaking yourself. Our bodies aren't built to run 60 miles a week and push yourself to the absolute limit 3 times a week during workouts. Growing up playing sports it never took much for me to get injured. My leg muscles and joints just have never been tough enough to endure what I put them through for long amounts of time. So when I chose college running I knew I was going to have to be very mentally tough throughout my 4 years here at Bradley. Now I am a senior and not to say I predicted the future but I have had quite my fair share of setbacks. From tearing my hamstring at an indoor conference meet to straining just about every muscle in my quad, and my latest I.T. band issue. Looking back it would have been so easy to jus give up. Yeah its pretty easy to go to treatment every morning and do exercises for 30 min every day ...

The Underwater Treadmill of Death

Well to start this off I just wanna say that I am 87% sure that my last blog post jinxed me. It was all about running, the good the bad and the even worse. And what do you know it we are now in the even worse stage. Recently I have been having a lot of problems with my I.T. band. This is a muscle that runs along the outside of your leg. It starts at your hip and runs all the way down to your knee. So basically if this muscle becomes very tight (like mine) you have extreme pain whenever you bend your leg at your knee. So basically anything except laying in bed motionless. Soooo yeah things are going great. Now instead of running I wake up at the crack of dawn to do lots and lots of painful exercises to try to strengthen basically all of my leg muscles so that my muscle magically happens to un-tighten from its ball of fury. You would think that running 50 miles a week would strengthen your legs right? Yeah I thought so too but the answer is no. Actually running so much just makes me mu...

Run-through

Hellloo. Welcome to my first ever blog. I guess the best way to start this would be with an introduction. My name is Savana Peterson and I am a senior marketing major and ML minor here at Bradley. I am from right smack dab in the middle of Nebraska. So far you probably have two thoughts. "Dang you're from the middle of nowhere" and "How in the world did you end up at Bradley?". Don't worry I'm prepared to answer both. Yes I am from the middle of nowhere. Literally in the exact middle of nowhere if we are being specific but I wouldn't change a thing about where I grew up. You get used to hearing ope 10 times a day and you meet so so so many genuine people. Basically the opposite from spending your afternoon in downtown Chicago. How did I end up out here? Easy, you're gonna here so much about this that you might be just as exhausted as I am. Running running and more running. Sounds fun right?? If you are saying no right about now then don't wor...
